Happy 50th Anniversary,Cal State Fullerton!

As one who has been on campus for 35 of those 50 years, I often reflect on the university’s evolution from small college to large university. Yes, Cal State Fullerton now stands as the second largest university in the state and one of the major universities in the nation with a student head count in the 35,000 range.

Those of you who graduated in the 1970s or 1980s may not find any of your old familiar haunts. Even we in communications took a forward step seven years ago: We crossed Nutwood and moved into a structure that many of you knew as the Hunt Wesson Building.

Over the years, the campus landscape has changed drastically. Four new classroom buildings have been built and a fifth will be completed this summer. In addition, the Titan Student Union and many auxiliary buildings were built or are in the process of being built.

But is bigness necessarily goodness? The College of Communications is one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation. In fact, size-wise the Department of Communications, with some 2,500 majors, is in the top two or three in the nation. But what about quality?

Quality is based on a number of criteria. The most obvious: (1) Are current students recognized for their accomplishments regionally and nationally? (2) Do our programs receive internal as well as external support? (3) Do we offer relevant programs for incoming students? and (4) Are alumni succeeding and being recognized for their accomplishments at state and national levels?

I assure you the College of Communications has passed the test. It has credibility, has gained significant visibility at the state and national levels, and has grown at an incredible rate. Our alumni continue to rack up awards, promotions and state and national leadership positions. It doesn’t get any better than this.

I’m proud to be associated with this 50-year-old university and the College of Communications.

"The College of Communications passes the test."
